LOL @ Marisol

Please reread the quote. Cain is calling the person predicting the housing crisis (ABC's Elizabeth Vargas) as crazy, a few months before the housing collapse. Cain is the one saying everything will be just fine.

Paul is the guy who predicted it years in advance, based on the absurdity of the policies in place. Meanwhile, Herman Cain was a paid lobbiest for the restaurant association.

Mairsol: I deliberately quoted the entire relevant section of the post this quote originated in, and linked to the actual post in question. That Herman Cain wrote these words (or at a bare minimum allowed his name to be attached to them) is beyond contestation. Wanna try again?

They completely leave out the "ABCs Elizabeth Vargas said" part and attribute the quote to Cain, while taking general statements about the economy and editing out parts to make it appear that Cain denied the housing bubble when he was showing how the media ignored their previous prediction. They try to proclaim Paul as some clairvoyant oracle to justify their unfettered worship of the man. Libertarians need to have their candidate Ron Paul run as a Libertarian and stop trying to infiltrate the Republican party.

Thomas:

Until this past June, I was a certified 6-12 Math teacher in Georgia. Trust me, I know all about the pains of teaching - and I maintain my position that our social studies teachers have failed us. Kids don't need to know "the entire world's history" - just that which had a direct impact on the US (in everything but World History, which is 1 class. In World History, obviously a quick review of the entirety of human existence is called for.)

I am only reading writing this once and I will probably not return to this website again. But here is my peace as a Social Studies teacher (in America and abroad). 1, you’re wrong. I don't know what school you went to but I learned about Locke, Hobbes and Montesquieu in high school and I teach them today. 2, Have you ever tried to teach uninterested 12-17 year olds about the "philosophical foundations" of anything? AND DO IT IN 35-45 minutes? Give me a break. Everyone sits on their high horse and says Teachers should do this, teachers should do that - Go teach. You try to do something. You tell Johnny who constantly picks his nose and has ADD that he has to learn philosophical foundations or "forcing to memory" the entire document. Get real.

Go back to high school - would you listen to you? Probably not. You would probably say something like "sit on it Potsie". 35 minutes a day, 5 days a week (not counting holidays, drills, other unforeseen distractions). You teach children the entire world’s history in about 4 years. Let me know how that works out for you.

You are dead on with this. Most Social Studies teachers rarely go into the philosophical foundations of the document. They do not mention Locke or Hobbes or Montesquieu. They take for granted the fact that the founding fathers have laid out rights and rarely explain from where these rights are derived.

For the most part, they speak only of the importance of "democracy" and the idea that if a government has a democracy, then it is good. Democracy is the good, not rights, not limited government. These clear principles established in this document, the Constitution and the Federalist papers are not even mentioned when teachers discuss this part. But of course, as we would agree, democracy is not the end. For the founding fathers, democracy (albeit, a very limited, controlled, regulated democracy) was the means to an end - liberty. Liberty was the highest good of the founders. Of course, liberty and equality are mentioned, but they, too, are rarely explained.

Comment on Good Friday Revisited: The Cult of Christianity by Stephen Northington

Jeff,
I was just thinking about you this evening. I hope you are doing well. I have to tell you I was touched reading your post about the cult of Christianity and I couldn't agree more. Back in 2003 I went to Romania and spent about 11 days in February freezing and on a mission trip. I saw people who made less than $1200 per year who lived in the old USSR govt. housing and in the eyes of Americans had nothing, but in the eyes of Christ they had everything. They realized the free gift of Christ's love of grace and salvation. When I returned to the states and began realizing how we as Americans call ourselves a Christian nation but we lived like the devil. Our churches created rules for us to live by and our denominations argued over who was right and who was wrong and never focused on Christ. I didn't start going back to church until last year and it was because of the "church". I do believe there are a few churches which have started to understand it is not about denominations but about Christ and living like Christ and loving like Christ. The one thing I truly realized through this journey is everything the church taught us when you and I were growing up, they pretty much got it wrong. The church should be the beacon on the hill people turn to in times of need and should be that force to say no matter where you come from, no matter your background, and no matter what you have done we won't judge you rather we will love you and share the good news of Christ and His love to you. One day the cult of Christianity will be judged and I am afraid the Savior is not going to say "Well done my good and faithful servant". I think he is going to say something quite different and I hope and pray that I have gotten it right. I think if we can love as Christ loved and live as He lived our world would be much better off.
